Landscape Character Assessment is the recognised methodology for describing the landscape and its defining characteristics at a variety of scales, from national through to parish level and can form an important part of the evidence base for Neighbourhood Plans.
We apply a methodology based on best practice as set out in the latest guidance (GLVIA3) to establish the sensitivity of identified Landscape Character Areas, assessing the finer grain of characterisation and identifying landscape assets. Assessment considers the experiences and perception of the local residents of their landscape and surroundings, heritage assets and the key elements and characteristics that make up the landscape character. These include the physical nature of the landscape, its land use, features such as hydrology, topography, vegetation and green spaces and significant views and vistas.
Findings of the assessment can identify potential issues and threats for the landscape, as well as inform draft landscape-related policies.
We can also coordinate community consultation, develop questionnaires and manage community consultation events.

We have a wealth of experience in the preparation of Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments, either as stand alone documents, summary appraisals or as chapters within Environmental Statements.
Our Landscape and Visual Appraisals can be used as part initial site assessments prior to committing to purchase. They can then be used throughout the design stage in assessing how best to sensitively integrate development within their setting which is particularly important in respect of sensitive sites such as those in or near to Green Belt, AONBs or other designated areas.
We have an established and robust methodology developed in line with latest guidance (GLVIA3) which we apply to a diverse variety of schemes such as large urban extensions, inner city tower blocks, individual buildings and structures, roads, and renewable energy projects.

The on going management following completion of schemes on-site is essential to the success of any development. Soft landscape schemes are dynamic systems and changes in management need to be considered over different time scales. There is no such thing as a maintenance free scheme, however Allen Pyke fully understand the management and maintenance implications and ensure that this is considered throughout all stages of the design process. Committed to providing cost effective and sustainable solutions, issues relating to the use of natural resources, including top soil and water are important factors in any scheme.
We regularly prepare detailed management plans for a range of existing and proposed landscapes. Often required to clear planning conditions, a considered management plan will ensure that a scheme will last for future generations.
