Our Philosophy

We are owned and managed by our dedicated team of landscape architects and administration staff.

Allen Pyke Associates were formed in 1995 and became an Employee Ownership Trust in 2019. We are led by the director team of Vincent Friedlander (Cambridge), Catherine Ritson (Bath) and James Hyde and Nicola Keen (London). The directors are supported by a committed group of landscape architects with a diverse range of project-based experience in the UK and oversees. Every member of the team is a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute or working towards that qualification. We believe in supporting and growing the landscape profession.

The wellbeing of our staff is crucial to our ethos. We work flexibly but continue to maintain a studio-based approach which encourages collaboration and the sharing of ideas.

At Allen Pyke we strive to stay up-to-date with latest legislation, regulations, guidance, and products. We are committed to continuing professional development ensuring that we are able to give our clients accurate, considered and effective advice.

Landscape Architect

Ursula began her career in Landscape Architecture in 2012 and graduated from Greenwich University in 2015 with a Masters in Landscape Architecture. Since joining our Kingston office in May 2016. Ursula has had the opportunity to work on large residential projects, parks, playgrounds, planting plans and a number of LVIA’s.  She is due to start P2C in Spring 2017.

Ursula’s interest in Landscape Architecture came from an extensive career in Parks. She worked for the London Boroughs of Ealing and Southwark, as a Park Ranger and latterly in Parks Outreach.  These roles involved teaching children about the environment, organising and running environment and sports related events, working with Friends of Parks groups on projects and fundraising, and conducting public consultations.  She was involved with the community element of several HLF projects, namely Nunhead Cemetery, Peckham Rye Park and Dulwich Park.

Beyond work, Ursula loves the outdoors, travel and keeping fit.  She has set herself a target of climbing at least one mountain per year with her children.

Tristram Bushby

Principal Landscape Architect

BA(Hons) BSc(Hons) MA(Hons) CMLI

Tristram became a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute in May 2016. He comes from a background in fine art where urban and rural landscape themes were explored at the macro scale through photography, painting and site specific sculpture. After gaining qualifications in Landscape Architecture he worked for a number of private practices on a range of high profile projects and joined Allen Pyke Associates in 2012.

Within the office he is able to apply his core skills which lie in an understanding of the contexts and specific needs of a site, applying sound ecological principles and his strong horticultural knowledge in order to create dynamic and deliverable design solutions. He is working on a range of projects including high density riverside projects through to large scale multi-phased residential masterplans. Tristram is also an active committee member for the London Branch of the Landscape Institute, organising and coordinating CPD and social events for the members.

Tristram makes an exceptional almond and apple cake and is very particular about how he takes his tea.

Susan Bertkau

Associate Landscape Architect

Dipl. Ing (FH) LA CMLI

Susan is a Chartered member of the Landscape Institute and originally joined the practice in 2007. She has since taken time off to welcome her two daughters and now enjoys a flexible work pattern to fit around her family’s needs.

Susan is responsible for running projects of varying scale and across various sectors and is a highly skilled designer with a particular interest in plant and play design.

She is currently working on a number of high-density, residential and mixed-use developments where she has been involved in complex planning negotiations, public consultations, play area design, soft landscape works with emphasis on ecological improvement and hard landscape proposals.

Susan enjoys pottering about in her garden where she is planning a small natural swimming pond with a healthy peat moor set beside a large rockery, drawing from the knowledge of her university thesis on culinary and healing plants of different habitats.

Tommy Degge

Tommy Degge

Landscape Technician

Tommy joined Allen Pyke in January 2023 as a Landscape Technician. As well as supporting our technical team, he will be studying for a Landscape Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship at Capel Manor College.

Tommy is our first apprentice, we are pleased to be supporting this new qualification developed by the Landscape Institute.

Vincent Friedlander

Technical Director

BA(Hons) MLD CMLI

Vincent joined the practice in 2003 and in 2007 set up the Cambridge office which he has managed since. As a Technical Director, he sits on the management team contributing to business development and company policy.

A chartered landscape architect, Vincent has worked in both the UK and abroad, spending a number of years in Nigeria and has worked on many high profile projects such as at Greenwich Millennium Village and Whitby Abbey. He is currently working on a number of high density urban developments and is responsible for setting up and managing several Framework contracts with a range of clients.

Over the years he has developed a specialism in green roofs and roof garden design. His flair for both concept design and expertise in detailed design has resulted in many successful and award winning developments.

Vincent is a keen cyclist and he is currently learning to play the trumpet, to add to his many other musical talents.

Kayleigh George

Senior Landscape Architect

Kayleigh joined Allen Pyke in July 2022. She is a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute and has a wealth of experience in mixed use, residential and commercial development.

Nora Greenwood

Principal Landscape Architect

MSc MA CMLI

Following a period of working as a freelance member of staff Nora joined us on a permanent basis in 2013. Having originally qualified in Hungary, Nora completed a Masters in Landscape and Urbanism at Kingston University. Nora qualified as a Chartered Landscape Architect in 2017 and has since been promoted to a Principle Landscape Architect.

Within the Kingston office Nora manages a number of complex schemes which are under construction or going through planning, including the Monksmoor Farm development in Daventry which was highly commended in the 2018 Planning Awards. She is also experienced in landscape and visual impact assessment and Green Belt reviews.

Nora loves to travel, cook and spend time in her garden.

James Hyde

Director

BA(Hons) DipLA CMLI

James is a Chartered member of the Landscape Institute and a Director within the practice.  Since joining Allen Pyke in 2003 has developed a diverse range of skills across both landscape design and environmental planning. He is able to work on projects across all scales and phases of projects, regularly working on planning applications and detailed design for construction as well as undertaking Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments.

He has a particular interest in the planning of urban developments and is currently project managing a number of large scale schemes for a range of developers where he is co-ordinating issues relating to landscape and arboriculture with multi-disciplinary teams and contractors.

In addition, James has responsibility for the companies Quality Assurance procedures insuring that the design teams across the two offices comply with relevant procedures. He also oversees matters relating CAD and design software including staff training and induction.

James is a keen snowboarder and he also supports West Ham United which he had no choice over, it’s in the blood.

Nicola Keen

Director

BA(Hons) DipLA CMLI

Nicola is a Chartered Landscape Architect and joined Allen Pyke in 2006. She has a particular interest in developing ecologically sustainable schemes and regularly works in close conjunction with ecologists to maximise ecological benefit of both urban and rural developments.

Nicola is a skilled designer and has worked on a range of projects from town centre improvements, hotels and a variety of residential schemes including a large scale multi-phased development overseeing work relating to the public realm including streetscapes, parks and play areas. She also has extensive experience of undertaking landscape and visual impact assessments.

Nicola, drawing on her expertise in Sustainable Urban Design Systems (SuDS), gave a presentation to the National SuDS Conference in June 2012, focusing on how landscape design and SuDS can improve the environment and enhance biodiversity.

In her spare time, Nicola is a regular volunteer for the Wandle Trust, helping to clean-up and restore the River Wandle. She also likes making animals out of wool. She is a Mental Health First Aider.

Claire Senechal

MSc, MA, CMLI

Claire joined our Kingston office in June 2021. She graduated from her final year at Writtle University College in 2016, receiving an MA in Landscape Architecture. She also holds a Master of Science degree in Landscape and Engineering from “Agrocampus Ouest – Angers Campus” University of Landscape and Horticulture Engineering, Angers, France. Her final projects in France and at Writtle focused on the appropriation of public spaces by the community and the need for risk in playground as a mean for children to experiment in a safe environment.

Within the practice Claire works as part of a team of Landscape Architects, assisting on various projects at different levels of implementation.

Claire has recently become a Chartered Landscape Architect and is particularly interested in visual impacts, natural playscape and sustainable urban drainage.

Lori Micu

Senior Landscape Architect

BA(Hons) MLA CMLI

Lori joined Allen Pyke’s Kingston team in 2015, after working at the Faculty of Architecture, Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna, Thailand. This was preceded by her graduation from Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urban Planning, Bucharest, Romania in 2014, where she received a Masters Diploma in Landscape and Territory Planning. Lori became a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute (CMLI) in November 2018, and a senior member of our team in September 2020.

Lori’s work, both internationally and in the UK, has offered her experience with large scale design, masterplanning, research and analysis.  Past projects have given her insight into a complex range of landscape issues, in rural and urban context, including conversion of brownfields, the value of cultural landscapes, augmentation of unique natural features of large scale sites, protected natural areas, heritage elements and large infrastructure.

Lori enjoys travelling, drawing and is a member of Urban Sketchers.

Catherine Ritson

Director

BLArch CMLI

Catherine is a Chartered Landscape Architect and a Director within the practice. She has over 20 years experience in the industry. She heads up the new Bath office but leads the wider team on Landscape Assessment and Large Scale Masterplanning across the UK. She regularly acts as Expert Witness on Landscape, Townscape and Visual matters and is a Supervisor on the Landscape Institute’s Pathway to Chartership.

Catherine’s key skills lie in her ability to work at all scales and in particular understanding the specific contexts of development sites. She has extensive experience in LVIAs, Green Belt reviews, capacity studies and the preparation of Green Infrastructure and landscape strategies. Catherine regularly works on landscape and public realm design projects across all development sectors. Her projects currently include a range of residential schemes, regeneration sites, solar farms, retirement villages, public parks, data centres and commercial developments.

Catherine loves running, hiking, camping and yoga. She especially enjoys exploring the English countryside with her small family and her big dog, Bo.

Sumayyah Shaikh

BAS, MLA

Sumayyah joined our Cambridge office in March 2019. She graduated from the University of Cape Town in 2017 with a Masters in Landscape Architecture. Her final dissertation project, titled Tactile Textile, was focused on materiality and was inspired by Textile Design. The project explored the act of Textile Design and manipulation and its prospective relationship with Landscape Architecture. The project aimed to revive the City of Cape Town’s blue-green network through the introduction of play and biodiversity. While studying she had the opportunity to participate in building a water platform in the informal settlement of Imizamo Yethu.

Since joining our Cambridge office, Sumayyah has had the opportunity to work on a number of different projects by working closely with the senior members of the team.

Sumayyah has worked for a passive and low energy design company in South Africa where she was employed as an Architecture Intern. During this time she also worked closely with the Green Building council of South Africa, working with their building rating tools and earning her qualification as a GBCSA Accredited professional.

Sumayyah is currently working towards becoming a Chartered Landscape Architect.

In her spare time Sumayyah enjoys travelling and making leather bags.

roger Watson

Roger Watson

Landscape Architect

Roger joined Allen Pyke in January 2023 as a Landscape Architect. He is based in our Cambridge office.

He has recently completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Landscape architecture at the University of East London. Roger’s projects both centred around connection to water in the public realm.

Roger’s working background is in agriculture and landscape construction, specifically in the construction of bespoke natural swimming ponds. Roger finds this practical experience useful in his work at Allen Pyke. His industry interests are biophilia, material re-use and water.

Outside of work Roger can be found busy in his vegetable garden, building things or walking his beloved spaniel, Dot.

David Allen

Consultant

David Allen retired from his role of Managing Director at the end of April 2021 and handed over his responsibilities for management and business development to the Directors. He continues to keep in touch and to provide support as an Expert Witness and Consultant to the team.

His extensive career has seen him develop a wide range of skills in landscape architecture and planning, across many development sectors in the UK and the Middle East. He has worked on complex highways and infrastructure projects, retail, leisure, healthcare and residential projects. David is known in the industry for his specialist expertise on issues relating to landscape and environmental planning and regularly contributes to Environmental Impact Assessments, undertaking Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments for many schemes, including in more recent years, renewable energy projects.

David has acted as an expert witness providing evidence at planning inquires and appeals on matters relating to landscape and visual issues for many projects, often dealing with complex sites such as those within Green Belt or other sensitive designations.

David is a keen Harlequins supporter and devotee of the ParkRun.
