Landscape Strategies & Public Realm Development

As part of multi-disciplinary teams, Allen Pyke are able to add considerable value to projects with early input into schemes regularly take the lead in the preparation of public realm and landscape strategies. We work hard to optimise layouts through the careful design and location of public open space, movement networks and integration of elements such as play, street furniture, planting and SuDS.

Landscape Character Assessment

Landscape Character Assessment is the recognised methodology for describing the landscape and its defining characteristics at a variety of scales, from national through to parish level and can form an important part of the evidence base for Neighbourhood Plans.

We apply a methodology based on best practice as set out in the latest guidance (GLVIA3) to establish the sensitivity of identified Landscape Character Areas, assessing the finer grain of characterisation and identifying landscape assets. Assessment considers the experiences and perception of the local residents of their landscape and surroundings, heritage assets and the key elements and characteristics that make up the landscape character. These include the physical nature of the landscape, its land use, features such as hydrology, topography, vegetation and green spaces and significant views and vistas.

Findings of the assessment can identify potential issues and threats for the landscape, as well as inform draft landscape-related policies.
We can also coordinate community consultation, develop questionnaires and manage community consultation events.

Design & Access Statements / Design Codes

Allen Pyke are able to co-ordinate and input into Design and Access Statements, a requirement of most planning applications. We can prepare comprehensive written and illustrative information relating to the key elements of Use, Amount, Layout, Scale, Landscape, Appearance and Access.

We regularly prepare and contribute to Design Codes where we are able to define considered site wide strategies for aspects such as open spaces, streetscapes, materials, street furniture and planting. This enables developers and local authorities to have confidence in the delivery of high quality schemes, particularly across multi-phased projects.

EIA / LVIA

We have a wealth of experience in the preparation of Landscape/Townscape Character and Visual Impact Assessments, either as stand alone documents or as chapters within Environmental Statements.

The information provided in an early, outline LVIA can assist clients as part initial site assessments prior to committing to purchase or develop. They can then be used throughout the design stage in assessing how best to sensitively integrate development within their setting which is particularly important in respect of sensitive sites such as those in or near to Green Belt, AONBs or other designated areas.

We have an established and robust methodology developed in line with latest guidance (GLVIA3) which we apply to a diverse variety of schemes such as large urban extensions, inner city tower blocks, individual buildings and structures, roads, and renewable energy projects.

Site Supervision/Contract Administration

Ensuring projects are implemented to a clients required standard is an essential part of the success of any scheme. Staff at Allen Pyke are experienced in the monitoring of both hard and soft landscape design and regularly provide advice on the appointment of sub-contractors, selection of plants at nurseries and approval of materials/sample areas on site to ensure quality in both supply and workmanship.

We are able to act as contract administrator for landscape schemes using the JCLI form of contractor and on larger or more complex schemes where other forms of contract are used we regularly assist clients on-site through inspection of hard and soft landscape throughout the construction phase of a scheme.

We take health and safety extremely seriously. All staff hold current Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards and receive regular training relating to heath and safety on site.

Roof Garden Design

We have an excellent track record of working on high density urban developments where often the most efficient way of achieving amenity space is through the design of gardens on roofs or podium decks above car parks.

Working closely with architects and engineers we are able to fully integrate the specific requirements relating to issues such as waterproofing, venting, structural loading, drainage and water storage within our designs ensuring that we achieve an optimum solution for our client and maximise the useable open space in a creative way attractive for those using the gardens.

Management Plans

The on going management following completion of schemes on-site is essential to the success of any development. Soft landscape schemes are dynamic systems and changes in management need to be considered over different time scales. There is no such thing as a maintenance free scheme, however Allen Pyke fully understand the management and maintenance implications and ensure that this is considered throughout all stages of the design process. Committed to providing cost effective and sustainable solutions, issues relating to the use of natural resources, including top soil and water are important factors in any scheme.

We regularly prepare detailed management plans for a range of existing and proposed landscapes. Often required to clear planning conditions, a considered management plan will ensure that a scheme will last for future generations.

Close

Ecology & Arboriculture

Guided by the legislative framework, Allen Pyke are able to co-ordinate the services of qualified ecologists and arboriculturalists as appropriate to the conditions of each site. Early input from specialist consultants will enable any constraints to be built into both the design and planning/ development programme, thereby optimising the potential to provide environmental improvements as well as avoiding or minimising delays to project.
