Allen Pyke initially developed concept designs for the landscape of this retirement village in 2009. We were then appointed throughout the planning and tender stages, and oversaw implementation on site.
The retirement village development comprises high quality 2 and 3 bedroom cottages and apartments set in 30 acres of landscaped grounds, exclusively for the over 55s. The layout also includes a care home for residents requiring support and a clubhouse with central amenity lawns and informal meadow and woodland walks adjacent to the existing countryside. There are a large variety of different types of open space within the development, encouraging residents to stay active and engage with their environment. Outdoor activities include croquet on the lawn by the clubhouse, use of communal vegetable plots with easy to access raised planters, and quiet contemplation in the lakeside yoga hut. An extensive network of paths, which take in routes through woodland and meadow, add to the sense of freedom and safety within the village.
The landscape design required early consultation with the ecologist and engineers due to the sensitivity of existing habitats and challenging levels. Features such as the lake, existing woodland and newly created meadow contribute to the natural character of the place. While more formal elements, such as the central square with water feature, give a more civic character to other parts of the village.
Allen Pyke carried out regular site visits and inspections and co-ordination with the landscape contractor and engineer throughout the construction and maintenance phases. This has ensured that planting was implemented in accordance with the landscape specification and will continue to provide long term visual and amenity value for new residents.
