Myddelton Square Gardens, Islington

Allen Pyke Associates were appointed by Marcus Cooper Group to prepare landscape refurbishment proposals for Myddelton Square Gardens, Islington.

An assessment of the Site’s historic and present day townscape character and visual connections informed the proposals which sought to maintain the enclosed sense of place within the Square and Gardens formed by the mature trees whilst identifying any opportunities to improve visual links to the Grade II Listed Church.

Residents and visitors would be encouraged to use the space for various activities whilst maintaining tranquil areas allowing for reflection and appreciation of the landscape and the Church. The detailed landscape proposals for the Site include restoration of footpaths, wildlife exploration areas, outdoor classrooms, a sculpture garden, an outdoor theatre, a new water feature, picnic lawns and a paved seating area for the new tea kiosk.

The proposals aimed to meet the key objective of English Heritage, namely to regenerate London squares and gardens to contribute to their ‘major social, cultural, visual, environmental and economic benefits for the city as a whole’.
